1944 US radio
shack, used in Europe by Allied Forces in WWII
The War & Peace
Collection has taken delivery of a rare World War Two US Army 'radio shack',
a specially developed van housing a vast array of communications equipment.
The mobile radio
shack dates from 1944 and saw service in Europe operating close to the
front line to intercept enemy wireless messages and to keep Allied commanders
in touch with their troops in the field. Its cramped and dim interior
would have been manned by three army communications specialists working
in shifts around the clock.
The shack was discovered
in a scrap yard in the Normandy region of France in 1988, brought to the
UK and restored and donated to the collection by Rex and Rod Cadman. It
can now be viewed complete with all its original radio broadcast and monitoring
equipment and wartime memorabilia used by the men who operated it.
"When I first
saw the shack, despite its dilapidated condition, I knew I had to find
it a permanent home at the Hop Farm Country Park. Restored to its former
glory it now makes a really interesting exhibit in the Collection."
The shack joins other
vehicles in the Collection including Churchill and Sherman Firefly tanks,
a Bren Gun Carrier, Dodge trucks, an M3A1 White scout car, an M16 Multiple
Gun Carriage half-track, a 22 ton Pacific M26 recovery truck and a M1
Ward La France wrecker, which will all be on display at the 2002 War and
Peace Show.
